About this tool
Picking teams by hand takes time and invites complaints of favouritism, whether it is a classroom, a five-a-side game, a workshop or an office quiz. This generator shuffles the names using the browser's cryptographic random source, so every arrangement is equally likely, and splits them as evenly as possible: teams never differ by more than one person.
Random does not always mean fair, though. If all the experienced players land on one side, the game is over before it starts. Add a tag after a name, such as a skill level, a role or a year group, and people with the same tag are dealt out across the teams one at a time, so each team gets its share of every tag while the draw stays random.
You can ask for a set number of teams or a team size, give teams numbers, letters or colours, and print or copy the result to share. Your list of names is remembered in this browser for next time.
Frequently asked questions
Is the draw really random?
Yes. Names are shuffled with crypto.getRandomValues, the same secure random source used for encryption, using an unbiased method so no order is more likely than another.
What happens if the numbers do not divide evenly?
Some teams get one extra person. Team sizes never differ by more than one.
How do tags balance the teams?
People sharing a tag are handed out across teams in turn, always to the team with the fewest of that tag. With four experts and two teams, each team gets two.
Can two people have the same name?
Yes. Repeated names get a number added, such as "Sam (2)", so you can tell them apart in the results.
Are the names sent anywhere?
No. The draw happens in your browser and the list is only saved locally, which matters for pupils' and colleagues' names.
