How to use the Favicon Generator
- Type one or two letters and pick a shape and colours, or switch to "Image" and drop in a square logo.
- Watch the size previews. If the 16 px version is hard to read, simplify the design or make the letters bigger.
- Open "More options" to add your site name, theme colour and the folder where the files will live.
- Press Download ZIP, upload the files, and paste the tags into the head of your pages.
About this tool
A favicon is the small picture that identifies your site in a browser tab, in bookmarks, in search results and on a phone home screen. Each of those places wants a different size and sometimes a different file type, which is why a proper set contains more than one file. This generator draws the whole set at once: a favicon.ico holding 16, 32 and 48 px versions, PNG files at 16, 32, 48, 180, 192 and 512 px, a site.webmanifest that phones read when someone installs your site, and the exact link tags to paste.
You can start from a square image, such as a PNG or SVG logo, or build a letter icon by typing one or two characters on a coloured square, rounded square or circle. The icons are drawn fresh at every size rather than scaled from one bitmap, so letters stay crisp at 16 px. The .ico file is assembled right here, with PNG data inside, which every current browser understands.
Tip: keep the 16 px version in mind while designing. Fine lines and small text vanish at that size, so a bold shape or a single letter nearly always wins. The 180 px icon is drawn edge to edge, because phones add their own rounded corners and show no transparency.
Frequently asked questions
Is my logo uploaded to make the icons?
No. The picture is drawn onto canvases inside your browser, and the .ico and ZIP files are assembled by a script on this page. The server never sees your logo.
Where do I put the files?
In the top folder of your site, next to your home page, unless you set a different folder under "More options". Then paste the tags inside the head element of every page. The README in the ZIP repeats these steps.
Why does my new favicon not show up?
Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Open the page in a private window, or load favicon.ico directly and refresh it, and the new icon should appear.
Do I still need a .ico file?
PNG icons cover modern browsers, but some older software, feed readers and search engines still ask for /favicon.ico by name. Including it costs nothing and avoids a stream of "not found" entries in your server log.
What is the manifest for?
site.webmanifest tells phones the name, colours and icons to use when a visitor adds your site to their home screen. It points at the 192 and 512 px PNG files from this set.
