About this tool

PDFs store text as positioned lines, not as paragraphs, so copying from one gives you a hard line break at the end of every visual line, words chopped in half by hyphenation, invisible soft hyphens, page numbers and running headers dropped in mid-sentence, and odd characters such as fi and fl that are really two letters glued together. Search, spell-check and word counts all trip over them.

This fixer rebuilds the text. Lines inside a paragraph are joined with a single space, while blank lines, bullet points and numbered items are kept on their own lines. It also recognises paragraph ends and headings that have no blank line around them: a line much shorter than the rest that ends a sentence, or a short title followed by a capital, starts a new paragraph.

Split words like "infor- mation" are rejoined, but a real compound such as "well-known" keeps its hyphen if it appears that way elsewhere in your text. Ligatures are expanded, zero-width characters and soft hyphens are removed, and non-breaking spaces become normal spaces. Tip: if a running title repeats on every page, turn on "Remove repeated headers & footers" under More options.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type or open is never sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Why does text copied from a PDF have line breaks everywhere?

A PDF records where each line of text sits on the page, not where paragraphs begin and end. When you copy, the reader adds a line break after every visual line. This tool works out which breaks are real and removes the rest.

Will it break my bullet points or numbered lists?

No. Lines that start with a bullet (•, -, *, ▪ and similar) or a number or letter followed by a dot or bracket begin a new line. Wrapped continuation lines of the same item are joined onto it.

What are ligatures and why do they cause problems?

Ligatures are single characters that stand for letter pairs, such as fi for "fi". They look right but are a different character, so "financial" will not match a search for "financial". The fixer replaces them with ordinary letters.

How is this different from the Remove Line Breaks tool?

Remove Line Breaks joins lines mechanically. This tool is tuned for PDFs: it repairs hyphenated words, keeps lists intact, detects paragraph ends without blank lines and strips page numbers and PDF-specific characters.

Is the text I paste kept private?

Yes. Everything is processed in your browser. The text is never uploaded, which makes it safe for contracts, reports and other confidential documents.
