About this tool

Sometimes you need to send something private through a channel you do not fully trust: an email, a chat app, a shared drive, a USB stick. This tool encrypts text or any file with a password so that the result is meaningless to anyone who does not know it. Share the password separately, by phone or in person, and only the intended person can read the content.

It uses the encryption built into your browser. Your password is stretched with 600,000 rounds of PBKDF2, which makes guessing it slow and expensive, and the data is sealed with AES-256-GCM, a modern standard that also detects tampering. The tool can tell the difference between a wrong password and a file that was changed or damaged after encryption, and says which it is. For files, even the original file name is hidden inside.

The password is the only key. There is no reset link and no back door, so a forgotten password means the data is gone for good. Use a long passphrase of four or more random words, and store it in a password manager.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type or open is never sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How secure is this?

AES-256-GCM with a properly stretched password is the same class of protection banks and governments use. In practice, security depends on your password: a short or common one can be guessed, a long random passphrase cannot.

Can I decrypt the result with another program?

The format is documented in this tool's source and uses only standard building blocks, but it is specific to this tool. The easiest way to decrypt is to come back to this page, which also works offline.

Is there a size limit for files?

The whole file is held in memory while it is encrypted, so the limit depends on your device. Files of a few hundred megabytes are usually fine on a computer; phones manage less.

I forgot my password. Can you help?

No one can. The password is never sent or stored anywhere, and there is no hidden key. That is exactly what keeps your data safe from everyone else.

Is anything uploaded when I encrypt?

No. The text or file is read, encrypted and saved on your own device. Nothing is sent over the internet, which you can confirm by switching off your connection before you start.
