About this tool

Moving content from a website, a CMS or a rich-text editor into Markdown-based tools such as documentation sites, wikis, static site generators or note apps usually means converting HTML by hand. This converter does it automatically, turning headings, paragraphs, emphasis, links, images, lists, quotes and code into their Markdown equivalents.

It goes beyond the basics. HTML tables become Markdown tables, struck-through text becomes ~~strikethrough~~, and checkboxes in lists become task-list items. Scripts, styles, embedded frames and other non-content markup are removed, and for a complete saved web page you can convert just the body.

Reference-style links keep long paragraphs readable by moving web addresses to a numbered list at the end. The core conversion uses the open-source Turndown library, with the extra rules for tables and checklists added for this tool.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type or open is never sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Will the formatting be identical?

Markdown has fewer features than HTML, so colours, fonts, column widths and complex layouts are dropped. Structure and emphasis, which is what Markdown is for, are kept.

What happens to tables with merged cells?

Markdown tables cannot merge cells, so each cell is written in its own column. Check complex tables after converting.

Can I convert a whole saved web page?

Yes. Paste the page source and keep "Use only the body" ticked, so the head section, menus in script tags and styles are left out.

Is my HTML uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so drafts and private pages stay on your device.
